Negative taken for November 4, 1959, Arkansas Gazette article "Washington Becoming Williamsburg of the Southwest," 1B:2, and July 27, 1958, Arkansas Gazette article "Restoration Movement Begins at Historic Washington, Ark.," 5F:1. A marker memorializing the blacksmith shop of James Black stood near the Chihuahua Trail in Washington, Arkansas. The marker reads, "On this site in 1831, James Black, a silversmith, made for Col. James Bowie the original of the famous Bowie knife. Black is said to have carried to his grave a secret formula for tempering steel which produced a product equal to the ancient Damascus blade. Erected May 1, 1939 by Charlean Moss Williams and Albert G. Simms."
